Sightseeing

Long years ago (1863 to be precise), when Sir Vere Henry Levinge then Collector of Madurai, started digging up for the lake, did he have a premonition that it is going to be the star of Kodaikanal? Obviously, it is not for nothing he must have made a complicated star shaped lake. But, that is what it turned out to be. What a star it is!! But in another way, Kodai lake is a great leveler. You find everyone who visits Kodaikanal here. The guy staying in Clarton rubbing shoulders with the guy who has no place to stay. It democratizes sight seeing. Nothing to pay for entry. Nothing to pay for conveyance. It is one of the few place here that can best be seen by walking around. All you need is the mind and mood to enjoy the beholding offering of nature. You have everything around this lake. Breath taking view of the hills, a Saibaba memorial, a Christian missionary enclave, a road side temple, Tibetan shop, activity center, bicycles on hire, horse riding, boating, balloon shooting for kids, a botanical garden in one end, tea shops ( Janyanti’s tea shop near the Clarton lane is my favorite), gift shopping, I might have missed some. Not just humans, you can find wild Bisons from the pine forest roaming around in the mornings. This the only sightseeing spot in Kodaikanal, that you can visit anytime of the day. Mist will not spoil the experience but would enhance the appeal. Many keep it as the last place to visit and come here in the evenings to relax and crowd it. So visit in th,e mornings and have half a day to spend here. Technical Information Surface area - 59 acres; Average depth - 3 m (9.8 ft) Max. depth - 11 m (36 ft) ; Shore length - 4.4 km (2.7 mi) Surface elevation 2,133 m (6,998 ft);

“Would you like to visit heaven?” “Sure.” “Fine. But to go there you should die first.” You are sure to yell “Go to hell.” There is a short cut, though. It is as close to heaven as you can get it without dying. You have a pocket sized Heaven. This guy Lt. Coaker , knows how to put his name on history with least effort. While his boss was breaking his back digging a pond and calling it is Kodai Lake (No body knows it as Hendry lake), this guy silently built a 1 KM stretch (1873) at scenic spot and put his name on it. Smart B....... What is unique about this road? While you have Viewpoints and viewpoints all over the hills, this is view road. If you are lucky, you can view far as Dolphin's Nose in the south, the valley of the Pambar River in the southeast, Periyakulam town and even the city of Madurai. All from this road itself as you walk along. Keep your camera handy. If you are even more lucky, then you will be a witness to a fascinating rare phenomenon called “Brocken specter”. This happens when a person can see his shadow on the clouds with a rainbow halo. This occurs when the sun is behind the viewer and clouds and mist are to the front. Now, you know the heaven connection. Go there in the mornings. Afternoons mist sets in. You can peep thro, the telescope for a fee which is as ancient as the walk itself and get disappointed. Technical Information:- Coaker's Walk, 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the bus-stand, constructed by Lt.Coaker in 1872, is a 1-kilometre (3,300 ft) paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai. The walk, winding around Mount Nebo, starts in front of the Van Allen hospital, running parallel to the Van Allen Hospital Road and joins the main road beside St.Peter's Church, providing a stunning panoramic view of the plains. The walkway is very well maintained and it's great spot for photography. One side of the walkway is occupied by majestic houses built during colonial period. Timings: 7 AM - 7 PM. Admission fee:- Rs 2, Camera Rs. 5, observatory (admission Rs. 3) with telescope about halfway along.

When the other British men were busy engraving their names in the history books like digging lakes, creating parks and walks our hero David Gelli entered the history of Kodaikanal in his own way. He did what all others are doing now in Kodaikanal. He had his honeymoon here with his wife Irene. I write about it because he started it first. At least first on record. But tragically it did not end well. She slipped and fell down from Pillar rock and David followed her later after putting up a white cross which remains till date. So, travelers, cannot go near the place. This is a slippery even in the best of times. I don’t know who measured it as 400 feet over the ground. But I believe them. These rocks rise vertically upward from the ground and have remained untouched by the human hand which makes it even more interesting. There are several hidden nooks and crannies in the rocks that are worth exploring, with each offering a unique view of the surrounding landscape. The place itself is a stunning beauty towering over the plains of Kodaikanal, they offer a breathtaking view of the surrounding natural scene from its many vantage points. While there are many interesting places to see when you are in Kodaikanal, there are none quite like the Pillar Rocks. No wonder David brought Irene here. The Pillar Rocks is the perfect place for a serene picnic or an adventure-filled weekend with your loved ones, when you are in Kodaikanal. Other Essential Information About Pillar Rocks Location: Pillar Rocks Road, Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu 624101 Timings: Monday to Sunday (9:00 am – 4:30 pm) Entry fees: Free entry Visitor’s Facilities: Washroom facilities (filthy), photography allowed, food stalls, day tour packages, locker and storage facilities Distance from Kodaikanal Bus Stand: Pillar Rocks is located at a distance of about 7km from the Kodaikanal Bus Stand. Parking Facilities: If you are driving your own car, there is a dedicated parking area right beside the summit of Pillar Rocks. Since there is no alternative way to travel to the Pillar Rocks without a hired car, this parking area is convenient and easily accessible from all the main viewpoints at Pillar Rock, but crowded during summer. How to Reach Pillar Rocks Either drive your own car or pick a cab from your hotel. It is one of the items to cover in all the conducted tours. You can even book a taxi for half a day if you can manage to finish your tour of the Pillar Rocks by the first half of the morning.

"Kanmani Anbodu Kadhalan" brought this caves into the spotlight. Guna the tamil block buster gave life to many. This cave is one among the beneficiaries. Even more intriguing is it took 175 years for it to get its due. In 1821, the Guna Caves, originally Devil’s Kitchen, were first discovered by an English Officer, B.S. Ward. It is actually caverns located amidst the three huge boulders. However, as time passed by the caves lost their place from people's mind. While these caves are a natural wonder, they are also particularly dangerous. The deeper parts of the cave are completely dark as the sunlight cannot penetrate. Today, many narrow paths of the caves are shut with iron grills and there are warning signs advising tourists not to venture ahead of the closed bars. The signboard also tells that the number of fatal falls from the caves stands 12 to date. Guna Caves is a protected site, but allows people to walk as close as they can get. Originally called Suicide point later renamed as Green valley view to be politically correct. But, both the names are apt. It got its prominence for wrong reasons a few decades ago in murder that shook the state. The body of a victim was dumped in this site. Having said that, this is the best view-point in Kodaikanal. It offers breadth-taking views of the Valley and Vaigai Dam. On way to the viewpoint you have to cross a small market where they sell homemade chocolates, ornaments and souvenirs. The shops are expensive and you can get the same thing for a cheaper price elsewhere in Kodaikanal. Also beware of several monkeys roaming around the viewpoint. Keep your eatables in and keep your spakes / sunglasses safe

Pine forest is another gift of Bryant gave to Kodaikanal, is whose name the park adjoining the lake stands. The addictive Magic mushrooms that grow around is the gift we gave it to ourselves. It showcases the mesmerizing nature around which has been preserved to date which is why it is also an important preserved heritage in the town. The sight of pine trees present in abundance and welcoming you to their world is nothing but nature's wonder with the forests appearing grey with dried cones and leaves. The Pine Forest is not a place with scenic views but is also perfect for long walks and unwinding. Spending some relaxing moments in the natural surroundings amongst the beautiful trees around is a charm and worth it. The Pine Forest has become one of the most famous sightseeing attractions due to the enjoyable atmosphere around. One can opt for horse riding, nature walks or taking photographs. An exciting camping experience can be looked forward to at the forests after you obtain permission from the local authorities about the same. If you are visiting when no one does, you will feel scared. Silent Valley View, situated at a short distance from Pillar Rocks, can be seen on the Berijam lake road. The best time to make a visit to this valley is during early morning and late afternoon. Since the valley is deep, children visiting this valley have to be accompanied by their parents. There is this dramatic scene in the tamil bloc buster “Thenali”. The heroine Jothika throws her cap in this valley eagerly waiting for the cap to return. In the next scene, you see the cap does return, but along with it comes our handsome hero Kamalhassan. He emerges from the depth carrying the cap on his head. There is little bit of physics in the works. Differential density, upward wind pressure all acting to put your cap back in your hands. It is called as “thoppi vesum paarai” in Tamil language, this implies “throwing cap rock”. Found 17kms away from kodaikanal town focus, it is an excellent scenic area. The valley views from the top are stunning. Greenery is in abundance. Wear good footwear on this trip. It’s wet around Kodai and the mountain trails are very slippery. On the slippery slope over looking the valley once I was tempted to throw my cap imaging Jothika might bring it back, but changed my mind realizing that she is married now, and what would happen to me if she comes with Surya, her husband who has a 6 pack abdomen. Some activities are best done only in the films.

Pambar falls, in Kodaikanal came under arc lights of a movie camera, when the makers of Liril bath soap wanted to launch the bath soap in early 80’s on the premise of a “refreshing bath”. What represents a refreshing feeling? After some false starts they narrowed down on, green colour, Lime, tilting music, mountain air, water falls & chill water. You could marvel the genius of Alyque Padamsee , the then Director of Lintas ad agency, that he could stitch all the above in the path breaking ad -a green swimsuit clad girl, frolicking enthusiastically under a waterfall, splashing about in total abandon singing “la…la la la laaa..”!! (click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9-1XD9VvX4 to go to the original ad). The rest is history. Pambar falls became Liril falls. Alyque Padamsee went on to become “ the god of Indian advertising”. Karen Lunel, the young girl who danced under water went on to became an aunty!!. Well on a serious note, Karen was an Airhostess with Air India and after the ad she became one of the sought after ramp walk models , later married a Tibatien called Hishey, works for an airline now. I hope it is not Kingfisher!! Liril falls or Pambar falls, whatever name you call it, it continues to be as refreshing as ever. Nestled just 4 kilometers from Kodai’s bus station, this stunning waterfall attracts hoards of visitors every day. It is a breathtaking spot where water pours down majestically over rocky steps, and hence the moniker ‘Grand Cascade’ Falls.

One of the best tourist spots with nothing to eat. Pack your lunch and come here and spend half day. Sheep farm, parisal boat, greenery, calm and peaceful place. Situated about 30 kms away from kodaikanal, it's takes about 1.5 hrs to reach this place, but the drive is very scenic, and better during tourist season as not many people visit this place, The mannavanur lake is a heart shaped lake, it has boating in traditional round boats , the climate here is pleasant, they also have a trekking area nearby, Don't take the horse ride to the lake as its a very short trek , do visit this place as its very scenic and usually away from crowd.

super view ....Vattakanal is shrouded in clouds. Though it’s just a seven-kilometre uphill drive from the better-known Kodaikanal, the little town of Vatta is nothing like the bustling tourist destination. Completely void of pollution, the clean air and cool weather makes it impossible to guess that the hill station is in one of the warmest states of South India.

City/town information

I think it is would interesting to dip into the history of the place you are planing to visit. Kodaikanal (Tamil: ) is a city in the hills of the taluk division of the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Its name in the Tamil language means "The Gift of the Forest". Kodaikanal is referred as the "Princess of Hill stations" and has a long history as a retreat and popular tourist destination. It's a lot cooler in temperature than lower elevation cities such as Chennai. Kodaikanal was established in 1845 as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases of the plains. Much of the local economy is based on the hospitality industry serving tourism. It is not known who first used this name or what they intended it to mean. However the following explanation makes some sense. By pronouncing with long Tamil 'O' as ko...dai means the summer and kanal means to see, which means a place to see in Summer. Kodaikanal is actually a summerforest. There is proof of settlement of prehistoric tribes at Kodaikanal by visible artifacts such as dolmens homes of great stone slabs. After the primitive tribes of Paliyans and Pulyans in 14th century, villagers of Palani foot hills fled into Kodai hills, to escape from the oppressive rule in the plains and also from the invasion of TippuSultan. The first European to visit Kodaikanal was Lt. B.S. Ward a surveyor in the year 1821. His Head Quarters was Vellagavi village. There were many American missions in South Tamil Nadu. The foreigners could not bear the oppressive heat in Tamilnadu and they faced sickness from pidemic diseases and consequential deaths. They wanted neat and healthy natural surroundings near Madurai to rest and improve their health. They were happy to find from the report of Lt. B.S. Ward about the hills with wonderful climate and easy accessibility from Madurai & Periyakulam. Many English and American missionary people visited Kodaikanal through various routes. Notable among them are J C Wroughton -S ub Collector, C R Cotton Judge and Dr. Weight. Dr.Fane built two houses in 1845 in the lake road. More houses were built by British Govt. The American Missionaries moved in and built a lot of wellings in the southern side which is still there and now called 'Sunny Side' and 'Shelton' . In the year 1860, the first church was built jointly by the Bishop. American Madurai Mission built the union church in 1895. From year 1860, there was all round improvement due to the visit of several dignitaries. Roman Catholics came, purchased a bungalow for Jesuit fathers, as rest house which is now called La Providence in upper shoal road. Governors of Madras Sir Charles Travelyon and Lord Napier visited in the years 1860 and 1871. One major JM Partridge of the army introduced Eucalyptus and wattle trees in the year 1867. Bier Leverage, collector of Madurai lived in Pamhar house after his retirement. Only through his tireless efforts and initiative the man-made Kodaikanal lake, the foremost attraction of the tourists was formed. He arranged boat rides in the lake. He planned and executed several approach roads to Kodaikanal. He introduced several foreign trees and vegetables such as Pine Forms and Pears. In the year 1872 Lt. Coaker cut a path along the ridge of steep south eastern side which commends a magnificant view of the plains below. The path was named after him as Coaker's Walk. Travel to Hills in the Past In the very early days, most of the visitorsto the hills came from Madurai. They had to walk in the steep grueling way. The popular route was from Periakulam to Kistnamma Naik Tope by road through bullock carts & Rom Tope through the hills. One has to climb 2000 metres height by foot paths. This route was called Coolie Ghat Road.Those who were not able to walk can hire dhoolies (a sort of palanquins) carried by hirers. Some went up by riding ponies. There were many risks. Some dacoits from Kalla tribes came but they soon vanished after seeing the high level of protection. Also there were interruptions by appearance of wild beasts like panthers, elephants, bisons etc. Loud noises were made to chase them away. In the year 1875 Southern Railways extended train route from Chennai to Madurai and Tuticorin. Due to this facility many tourists from far off places visited. They alight at Kodairoad Station and travel by bullock up to Tope and then ascend the climbs.The government deputed Engineer Major Law to study and submit a plan to build a moterable road to the hills. After a long delay, the road was completed in 1914 and at last allowed for traffic in 1916. Public buses began to ply in the road from 1916.

Culture

Kodaikanal will hardly look like a place where aboriginal tribes lived. Don't ask anyone "if you are a Puliyans or Paliyans descendent". It is disrespectful. 1st century AD is a long time ago, and these indigenous tribes who were once "gatherers and hunters" have since got assimilated into the community. I haven't seen anyone who calls himself an aboriginal. Now, people find employment in areas like horticulture, plantations and tourism. Native language is Tamil. English is taught in school. Being a tourist destination, people of Kodaikanal can manage other Indian languages as well.
Facilidad para moverse por la casa

Public transport limited place

Very limited public transport here. Also no 2 wheeler rental or auto's here. Drive your car or hire a cab. 1. Self driving would be thrilling during non season and pain during high season. 2. If you are reaching Kodai by public transport like Train or bus then you need to hire a cab or go on a conducted tour. 3. Lake-Byrant park-Coaker's walk leg doesn't need a cab. All other places need a 4 wheeler. You can book a seat in 18 seater mini van on the sightseeing circuit. They take you to the same spots, could be little hurried but a lot cheaper.
