Iao Valley State Park is a must-see It is easily accessible by car, has paved walkways, steps, and signage with historical information. It is also dramatically scenic and particularly well suited for older folks and kids
This is where our history begins and King Kamehameha has the war to begin taking over the Hawaiian Islands
$5 entry fee but Iao (ee-ow) valley is has stunning views and the best valley drive on Maui. For it's grandeur, it's not well known and one of my 5 "don't miss" things to do on Maui.
If there is space, park just before the entrance on the right side of the road to avoid paying a parking fee. Very easy paved hikes (good for families), with some great views, and if you wish you can also frolic in the water streams. If you don't hang around at all and just walk all the paths, you can be done in 30 minutes. So take your time, relax at the spots you like, and enjoy nature.
