In the late 1800's, Gathland featured a unique collection of buildings and structures designed and constructed by Townsend. Two of the structures, the Main Hall and Lodge, were partially restored in the 1950's. A large stone monument dedicated to the memory of Civil War correspondents is the outstanding attraction of this day-use park. Explore the park or hike on the Appalachian Trail from here to White Rocks which overlooks the beautiful Middletown Valley. Located ~10 mins from the farm.
Easiest place to access the Appalachian Trail without having to climb great scenic views as this state park is on top of the mountain ridge. Picnic pavilion and public restrooms are available here.
Enjoy an easier day hike on the Appalachian Trail. Longer day hike (8 miles out and back ) to White Rock offers a fabulous view. Water and restrooms (in season). Memorial to journalists killed in the line of duty. Small museum about civil war journalism.
