One of the most beautiful theaters with a long-standing history in Lisbon. It offers a fantastic variety of performances, particularly in early September, where the theater’s doors will open for ‘Entrada Livre’, a special program that includes shows in all the rooms of the theater as well as music concerts on the theater’s balcony. National Theater. Beautiful building from the XV century. This historical theatre is one of the most prestigious Portuguese venues and is located in the Rossio square, in the centre of the city.

Founded by Almeida Garrett, and inaugurated in 1846, the D. Maria II National Theatre, designed by Italian architect Fortunato Lodi, has a neoclassical architectural style. The Theatre was virtually destroyed by fire in 1964 and re-opened to the general public, after having been rebuilt and modernised, in 1978. The National Theatre’s mission is to disseminate leading works from world theatre, having staged performances of great artistic and technical quality.

This neoclassical theatre is located in Rossio, in Praça D. Pedro IV. It was founded in 1846, on the regent queen's 27th birthday, hence the name Dona Maria II. A terrible fire destroyed the inside of the theater in 1964, which was rebuilt and reopened in 1978. Many of the plays are subtitled in English, being accessible to everyone
