This vivid cobalt rooster from Katharina Fritsch electrifies the rooftop at the National Gallery of Art's East Building. It’s pretty difficult to take a bad photo of the 15-foot fowl. Face east and you can capture the U.S. Capitol dome above the tree line; turn west and you’ve got a great view down Pennsylvania Avenue.

The recently built modern art side of the National Art Gallery has a terrace with wonderful Capitol views. Don’t miss the light installation in basement pass-through between the east and west wings of the museum.

This is my favorite Museum to go to again and again, because the Iconic Im Pei Building with its waterful by its cafe, and underground walkway, are relaxing and always fun and a great place to people watch. It also has a great gift store and great permanent and rotating exhibits. It is right in the middle of all the Smithsonian museums along the Mall.

The East building is dedicated to modern art. The walkway in the basement (it's a must see!) connects to the West Building. There's a cafe there also to lounge and take a break.

Perched near the U.S. Capitol Building, the National Gallery of Art is one of the most impressive museums in the city. Founded by Andrew W. Mellon, the museum comprises two buildings: the West Building, modeled after the Roman Pantheon, and the East Building, designed by modernist architect I.M. Pei. On a nice day, you could hardly do better than a stroll through the museum’s Sculpture Garden, which hosts jazz concerts in summer and an ice rink in winter. It also has the most classic collection in the city, with a focus mainly on European and American paintings, sculpture, prints, photographs, and other media. You’ll find a number of works from famed artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Vermeer, and Rembrandt, as well as later pieces from the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Roy Lichtenstein. The Sculpture Garden contains works by Marc Chagall and Joan Miró, as well as Robert Indiana's famous "AMOR."
