People may have heard or know something about James Cook but this is a man who undertook mind boggling depths of exploration with fantastic amounts of success. He was a great cartographer and skilled artist. He was the first to map out the 1000 miles east coast of Australia and New Zealand - accordingly most of what can be found on the costs of those two countries was named by Cook.A man who had a tragic end but who achieved so very much in life. If you look at the base of the statue and see the additional plates added to the statues by representatives of the above countries and others to continue to mark the achievements of this local lad.
