Located on a hilltop in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) is a facility dedicated to expanding its knowledge of the Universe and educating the public about the wonders of Astronomy. Their site provides an unobstructed view of the entire nighttime sky. By day, they boast stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. Be sure to check their website for active hours.

With 85% of the world's population no longer able to see a true night sky, a visit to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is a special treat. We are fortunate to be in one of the few remaining areas of the world that can boast about having true dark skies. I have been able to photograph both the Milky Way and Aurora Borealis around Southern Alberta, and this is a very cool spot where you can experience it as well.
