This place, and this area in general is well known for its beautiful passages and streets. Preserved well from the olden days of Kyoto, this place is a great walk for those looking to see what Kyoto was like years ago.

Just downhill from and slightly to the north of Kiyomizu-dera, you will find one of Kyoto’s loveliest restored neighbourhoods, the Ninen-zaka–Sannen-zaka area. The name refers to the two main streets of the area: Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka, literally ‘Two-Year Hill’ and ‘Three-Year Hill’ (the years referring to the ancient imperial years when they were first laid out). These two charming streets are lined with old wooden houses, traditional shops and restaurants. If you fancy a break, there are many tea houses and cafes along these lanes.

A few meters from Kiyomizu Temple, you find charming streets such as Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka which still keep the traditional look and feeling of how Kyoto was back in the old days. Around a 30-min walk from our hotel and house.

The area along Ninenzaka slope keeps the atmosphere of traditional old Kyoto and are regarded as one of the best sightseeing spots in Kyoto. The stone pavement originally built as the approach to Kiyomizu-dera is now lined with a lot of souvenir shops.
