The Midway is quintessential East Atlanta: a converted car repair shop that retains its industrial edge, crowded by tattooed regulars who spill from the brick interior onto a tempting patio when the building’s garage doors are open. The list of more than 120 beers changes frequently and favors craft brews from around the country. Also great bar food

Located at the Edge apartment complex along the Eastside Beltline trail, the all-day cafe opens for coffee only on Monday, October 28, with the full food and wine menu beginning Tuesday. Hazel Jane’s serves coffee throughout the morning, followed by lunch, a mid-day aperitivo, and dinner in the evenings. Brunch replaces lunch on the weekends. Sommelier Melissa Davis, formerly of Staplehouse, oversees day-to-day operations and the bar’s small wine shop. Hazel Jane’s carries nearly 150 wines by the glass and bottle and over 40 sherry and vermouth selections and a variety of fortified wines. The wine list ranges from dusty, old world reds and whites to skin contacts, sparkling wines, and hard to find bottles. All wines are available by the glass. Food from chef Brad Morris (Ticonderoga Club, Empire State South) includes light lunch and snacks and shared plates during dinner, like marinated olives and spiced almonds, mussels and white beans in pork broth, and a roast chicken. “We believe that wine and food should be enjoyed among a group at a table and the best way to do that is with sharable plates,” Davis tells Eater Atlanta. “Our menu will rotate based on what’s available from local farmers and will include sharable small plate options for dinner, abbreviated brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday, and a light lunch menu Tuesday through Friday.”

Its many regulars will be appalled to know we almost left the Earl, one of the best music venues in town, off our list. But look, this is a list of bars. An experiment in culture & sound. Small groups come together with a common goal. Boost energy, forget troubles, expand consciousness. OK, expand lungs. So many songs. Conscientious rooms. OK, sick-ass rooms. In the essence of the original inventors, deservedly having earned the Nobel Peace prize for providing millions of humans with healing experiences, we seek to journey to the center of that good source. From there we spring up many things for you. We love to share. FAM-FAM Karaoke, a temporal creation by the Inventions group RadioKo, makes real-deal karaoke for ITP. Sweetwater Creek State Park is a peaceful tract of wilderness only minutes from downtown Atlanta. A wooded trail follows the stream to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War. Beyond the mill, the trail climbs rocky bluffs to provide views of the beautiful rapids below. Additional trails wind through fields and forest, showcasing ferns, magnolias, wild azaleas and hardwoods. Park rangers lead informative hikes to these areas throughout the year. The 215 acre George Sparks Reservoir is popular for fishing and provides a pretty setting for feeding ducks and picnicking. However, there is no beach and swimming in the Reservoir is not allowed. Fishing supplies are available in the adjacent bait shop. During warmer months, the park rents fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats. Visitors can join the Park Paddlers Club, which challenges them to explore waterways in six state parks. An award-winning Visitor Center—one of the most environmentally responsible buildings in the country—features exhibits on the area’s history, wildlife displays, trail maps, snacks and a renovated gift shop. A window-lined meeting room that seats 40 can be rented for gatherings.

Scenic, artistic, and a bit unusual: it’s one of Atlanta’s most unique hiking adventures. This multi-trail adventure at Constitution Lakes Park crosses paved paths, unpaved trails, and boardwalks through scenic, wildlife-filled wetlands, catching views of several small, marshy lakes. The Doll’s Head Trail, a short loop in the middle of this adventure, is an ultra-unique experience, a short hike through displays of bricks, toys, and tiles found at the park. A nod to sibling owners Howard and Anita Hsu's Asian roots and Southern upbringing, Sweet Auburn Barbecue offers traditional style barbecue with an Asian twist. Items on the menu, such as pimento cheese wontons and coconut lemongrass ribs, demonstrate the perfect marriage of traditional and innovative styles that Sweet Auburn Barbecue has become known for. Howard and Anita grew up working in the hustle of their family restaurants. From a young age they gained a passion for food and hospitality. Soon after graduating from the University of Georgia, the brother and sister duo opened Gezzo’s West Coast Burritos in Henry Country. With the success of Gezzo’s, Howard set out to expand the business and started experimenting with smoked meats. Eventually, his special BBQ recipes won the Chomp and Stomp chili cook off, Suwanee Wing Festival and Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation BBQ Battle three years in a row. Sweet Auburn Market saw how much Atlanta loved the Hsu’s southern style BBQ with an Asian twist and invited Howard to open a permanent restaurant within the market. Here, the name “Sweet Auburn Barbecue” was born. For two years, Sweet Auburn Barbecue flourished with its food truck and the Sweet Auburn Market location. In 2014, Howard and Anita expanded once again, opening the Poncey-Highlands location. This location features a full-service dining experience including a full bar and cocktail menu, taking their award-winning barbecue experience to a whole new level. https://www.sweetauburnbbq.com/

Growing up in Texas, twin brothers Jonathan and Justin Fox were inspired by Texas heat and southern spice. After moving from Fort Worth to Atlanta, Justin and Jonathan were homesick for Texas-style barbecue and after being unable to find the flavors they grew up with, the twin brothers decided to take matters into their own hands. With no professional training, Jonathan and Justin began throwing backyard gatherings for friends and family to test out their barbecue skills. Small gatherings grew into cooking for over 250 people, a barbecue catering operation was born. After a pop-up stint at Smith's Olde Bar in 2005 where Fox Brothers was named “Runner-up Best Barbecue in Atlanta", the brothers decided to open their own restaurant. In 2007, The Brothers along with partner Beau Nolen, opened the Candler Park location on Dekalb Avenue and began welcoming guests with their signature style of smoked brisket, pulled pork, wings, and a mix of original side dishes seven days a week. http://foxbrosbbq.com/fox-bros-home.html

Inspired by our travels to Asia and memories of growing up, we all craved the unapologetic flavors of true Asian food—dumplings with bounce, spicy curries, crisp pork belly, and the list goes on. When in Asia, we knew the best dishes were on the streets from hawker stalls. At home, we turned to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to get a fix from generations-old comfort food recipes. We sought out restaurants in hopes of finding a gem, only to be disappointed 9 times out of 10. Finally, it hit us—we had to redefine “eating Asian” in the states. From day one, the food was at the core of Hawkers Asian Street Fare—generations of Asian street food recipes have been passed down, some of which are still served on the streets of Asia. But there had to be more. We wanted to build a restaurant that would tell the story of the hawker experience in a subtle and design-conscious way. We wanted great drinks to pair with great food. Most importantly, we wanted to create a place that was high-energy, but approachable in a t-shirt or a sports coat. After months of planning, we opened the doors to the first Hawkers Asian Street Fare on March 15, 2011, in the Mills 50 neighborhood of Orlando. A week later we had a line around the block. Since then, we’ve taken the Hawkers’ brand coast to coast (of Florida, that is). And with regional expansion plans to South Florida, Atlanta, and beyond, the best is yet to come. https://eathawkers.com/

Chef Kevin Gillespie’s restaurant, Gunshow, offers a bold, interactive take on the traditional dining experience. Dishes are presented on rolling carts and trays to diners at their tables where they can then choose what to order. Pricing is a la carte. Along with an innovative dining experience, the restaurant’s design is also unique. With few walls and a highly visible kitchen, Gillespie and the talented team at ai3, Inc. have created a sense of transparency throughout Gunshow. The restaurant’s name is a tribute to his family. Growing up, Gillespie’s father worked seven days a week to provide a better life for his family. On the rare Sunday afternoon he had off, father and son would go to a gun show. Gunshow is located in the Glenwood Park neighborhood of Atlanta. https://gunshowatl.com/

Grindhouse Killer Burgers served its first customer in 2009, inside the Sweet Auburn Curb Market in downtown Atlanta. The concept was created by by Alex Brounstein, an Emory graduate and former real estate attorney, who had been working to jump start the revitalization of Atlanta's historic indoor public market. Situated among seafood, meat and produce vendors, Grindhouse quickly became known as the place to get some of Atlanta’s best burgers in one of the most unique and fun atmospheres in the city. In its first year in business, Grindhouse immediately began receiving "Best in Atlanta" awards from local publications such as Creative Loafing and Atlanta Magazine, for its hamburgers, veggie burgers and homemade brisket chili. Customers lined up for their fresh ground burger fix, and stuck around for the campy B-movies and Kung Fu flicks projecting on the subway tile walls. In 2011, Grindhouse expanded with the opening of its second, "flagship" 100+ seat location on Piedmont Avenue near Cheshire Bridge Road, a converted fueling station featuring a killer covered patio, giant Killer Burgers neon signage, and a full bar featuring its now infamous Boozy Shakes. In 2013, Grindhouse added its first brand new, ground up location in the Five Points area of Athens, with a rooftop sports bar and patio. In close proximity to the campus athletic fields and venues, Grindhouse Athens has become the go-to destination for pre and post game festivities as well. In 2016, Grindhouse added a fourth location in downtown Decatur, with a similar rooftop bar and patio design. In 2018 we added a fifth flagship location on Memorial Drive. For those in need of a quick burger and beer fix before or after a flight, Grindhouse also has 2 locations in the T-Gates and D Concourse of the Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport. http://www.grindhouseburgers.com/
