St Ali takes their coffee very seriously - serious enough to be named one of the most pretentious things ever in a Buzzfeed listicle in 2013. But, that’s not all they’re known for. Head Barista, Matt Perger placed first in the World Coffee & Good Spirits Championship in 2014; Second in the 2013 World Barista Championship for his redial, rethink on filter coffee- a paradigm shift in the category- as well as winning first place in the 2012 World Brewer’s Cup.

Epitomising cafe cool, Top Paddock is a shining star in the Richmond brunch scene. The fit-out is bright and airy, with a huge wooden outdoor area spotted with umbrellas. The interior is full of natural light and pot plants, making for a refreshing space to have some chilli scrambles on toast, or the pretty-as-a-picture bircher muesli. The crew brews beans from Five Senses and, as a refreshing twist, all ingredients for their delicious dishes are sourced from organic suppliers in Australia. This is a place we recommend to our friends when they're visiting us from interstate or overseas, to show them the calibre of cafe that Melbourne has on offer.

Cleverly named after the white tiled pole in the centre of the café they could not remove, Pillar of Salt is one of the top picks for brunching in Richmond. Like all good Melbourne cafes they offer a simple breakfast and lunch menu (takeaway baguettes too!) with injections of personality to make it interesting. Such as their 'Summer in Paris' breakfast - half a ruby grapefruit served with a freshly baked croissant and French butter - yum! They brew 5 Senses coffee and you can sip away in their big ol' courtyard or amongst the cute black cushioned chairs inside. Don't leave without trying their chilli scrambled eggs, they're famous for a reason.

While none of the dishes have eggs (it's part of their vego policy), you certainly won't be missing out on your brunch fix here: the buckwheat apple pancakes served with cinnamon ice cream, maple syrup, vanilla bean whipped cream and dehydrated apple chips is a delight, and the Umami Mushrooms could satisfy any meat lover. After all, how do you say no to slow roasted king oyster, shitake, oyster & swiss brown mushrooms on a house made pumpkin, spinach & sun dried tomato polenta bread—served w/ goats cheese, thyme & red chili oil. Sweetcorn hotcakes and breakfast trifle also make an appearance on the menu. One word: Nirvana.

Famed for its brunch menu, Tall Timber on Commercial Road is a welcome addition to Prahran. Open every day for breakfast and lunch, you'll love the mix of staple menu items, and the smattering of dishes slightly left of centre, like raw cacao and cranberry crunch. Sit in the front window and soak up the sun, or bunker down with a newspaper on the communal table.

This is the place to come if you're looking for Instagrammable food on the city fringe: think King Island crayfish rolls and polenta porridge with burnt maple—plus, they've still made room for their infamous (and totally photographable) ricotta hot cakes. Our pick of the bunch is the Cape Grim beef with house made mustard on their signature black ash bun. With a coffee cart sitting out front to ply you with caffeine while you wait for a table, The Kettle Black have the crowds sorted—so sit back, relax and enjoy the food!
