The history of the Comacina Island Inhabited since ancient times, due to its strategic position, this unique island of Lake Como has had its own particular history. The discovery under the current church of S. Giovanni of the remains of a building with columns indicates the existence of a Roman-era construction of considerable proportions, perhaps a villa or a pagan temple. Towards the middle of the 5th century, Christianity spread throughout the area and the Bishop of Como, S. Abbondio, founded an oratory on the island, dedicating it to S. Eufemia. The history of the island was distinguished at the time of the barbarian invasions in the mid-sixth century. It was precisely on the fortified island that the Magister militum Francione, the last Byzantine military commander, governed for years, and resisted the sieges of the Longobards of Autari for six months before capitulating in 585. The source of this news is a Lombard historian, the friar Paolo Diacono. That it was a strong and safe place is demonstrated by the fact that the island's fortifications served as a refuge for various rebel or fleeing Lombard leaders. A period of peace from 607 to 616 was brought about by Agrippino, the first bishop of Como appointed by Aquileia, who died and was buried on the island. At the end of the 10th century the island was occupied by the Bishop of Como Gualdo and his successor Litigerio founded the Collegiate Church of S. Eufemia in 1031. In the Communal Era, the island, increasingly powerful, sided with Milan against Como and followed the events until the defeat of Milan due to Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa. The people of Como, eager for revenge, obtained the destruction of the island from the emperor in 1169. Inside the fortified walls of the island there was a settlement with stairs carved into the rock, masonry buildings and sewage systems and the historical sources have left us the name of some religious buildings existing before the destruction: S. Eufemia, S .Giovanni, S. Maria with the Portico, S. Pietro, and the convent of SS. Faustino and Giovita. Since its destruction the island was no longer inhabited. Even today, every year this tragic event is remembered on the Saturday and Sunday of the week in which June 24th, the feast of San Giovanni, falls. The lake is brightly lit with thousands of lumaghitt, floating candles abandoned on the water, as if to remember the derelict souls who sailed from one bank to the other, escaping from their burning houses. A fireworks display reconstructs the fire and destruction of the island. Initially owned by the bishop, the island subsequently changed hands through various owners. In 1919 it was even bequeathed to King Albert I of Belgium and for a year it became an enclave under Belgian sovereignty, in 1920 it was returned to the Italian State through a moral body headed by the Consul of Belgium and the president of the Academy of Brera with the aim of building a village for artists and a hotel. The hotel was never built, however, in addition to the inn in 1964, three villas were built in 1939 to a design by the architect Pietro Lingeri, well integrated into the context of the island and still today an object of admiration. The Romanesque Basilica of S. Eufemia was instead brought to light in 1914 by the excavation campaign conducted by the archaeologist Ugo Monnaret De Villard. However, it was necessary to get to 1958 for an organic excavation campaign, led by the architect L. M. Belloni, to bring to light the areas of various religious buildings including a two-sided baptistery with mosaics. The current church dedicated to St. John was built in the 16th century on the ruins of previous buildings, as can be deduced from a document dated 1683, from which also originates the Festival of St. John the Baptist (end of June), an event particularly felt by the population.
