In recent years, the former industrial district has become one of Copenhagen’s hippest areas and a hub for creativity, alternative urban development, festivals and great foods of very different kinds. Easily reached by bike, bus or even harbour bus, the island is an integral part of the city but with its very own identity.

Before moving to Valby, I lived for 8 years in Nørrbro, and it is undoubtably still my most favorite part of Copenhagen. Head to Elmegade for a local experience. Elmegade is a popular and vibrant side street to Nørrebrogade and Sankt Hans Square in Nørrebro. The street buzzes with activity and is known for its small creative boutiques, bars, take away’s and cafes. In Elmegade, the atmosphere is relaxing and cozy.

A few years ago, Jægersborggade was best known for its bullet holes, drug dealing and gang wars. Today, the little cobblestone street in Nørrebro transformed itself into one of the city's most trendy streets, which accommodates everything from a Michelin restaurant to a caramel cookery. It is almost impossible to believe that a stretch of approx. 300 meters can house so many exciting eateries, wine bars and deli shops. The transformation of this little street portrays the story of a rapid gentrification from a "pushers paradise" to a gastronomic "gade". Drug and gang violence are out and charming coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants are in.
