The Avro Vulcan is an iconic example of British aerospace engineering at its world-beating best. Its impressive list of technical achievements includes being the first successful large delta wing aircraft, leading directly to Concorde and the Space Shuttle, and delivering performance and agility so close to a jet fighter’s that it was given a fighter-style control column in place of the traditional bomber pilot’s yoke. That agility allowed XH558 to deliver amazing air displays, which unfortunately finished in 2015, but there are great plans to use her as an inspirational centrepiece in a future ETNA Centre. Now the Trust is expanding its horizons with inspirational work to demonstrate engineering excellence in early generation jet-engine aircraft with the planned restoration of Canberra WK163. XH558 is an iconic example of that remarkable period of intense post-war innovation that made British aviation technology the envy of the world. As the many displays at her hangar demonstrate, this allowed her to play a fascinating role in keeping the peace during the Cold War, a period of terrifying global tension. It’s a truly remarkable story. Vulcan to the Sky Trust already has an established education programme, working with schools, colleges and other organisations. In her new life, still able to accelerate dramatically along the runway, XH558 will build on this exciting provenance to inspire and educate new generations of young people, focussing on the technical skills that our country needs so badly. Location - Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Doncaster South Yorkshire DN9 3GF

Far Ings nature reserve is a diverse landscape made up of reedbeds, meadow and scrub, and both freshwater and saltwater environments. This varied habitat is rich in microscopic life and invertebrates, which in turn support fish such as perch and roach which provide a food source to a huge variety of birds including heron and kingfisher Management work undertaken has improved the reedbed habitat and created more open feeding areas with the aim of attracting bitterns back as a nesting species. After an absence of 21 years, bitterns began breeding again in 2000. It is possible to hear them ‘booming’ in the spring from around March. A good location to try is the double decker hide at Ness End Farm, bitterns are seen from here on a regular but infrequent basis – they are very shy birds and good at hiding.

Iconic landmark. Still one of the longest single span bridges in the world. One mile between the uprights makes it an ideal and bracing walk or bike ride. Parking is available.

Traditional yet unique approach to food and drink makes The Hope and Anchor a special place to visit. This 19th-century pub is nestled at the heart of the South Ferriby community, located just five minutes from the mighty Humber Bridge in North Lincolnshire. The Pub offers a combination of traditional seasonal cuisine and historic dishes. Chef Patron, Slawek Mikolajczyk’s quest for excellence in taste and flavour is combined with his respect and love of fresh seasonal produce to create a menu of British favourites in harmony with the building’s Maritime origins. Locally sourced guest ales, superb cocktails and a carefully selected wine list all contribute to the perfect place to unwind, for locals and visitors alike. They welcome a broad range of guests who appreciate the simple yet satisfying things in life, whether it be a “cheeky” pint after a dog walk or bird watching, sailing in via the Humber, or just to enjoy great wine and wanting simple food cooked well. Main Courses around the £20 mark and upwards.
