Sightseeing

The Acropolis and its surroundings The Parthenon, the temple of Athena, is the major attraction. There is also the Erechteion, whose columns are statues of the female Caryatids, though the original statues have been replaced by copies due to air pollution (the originals are in the new Museum or ... in London!). On the southern slopes of the Acropolis lies the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman theatre with room for as many as 5.000 spectators. It is used during the annual Athens Festival for world-class ballet and music performances. The Dionysus Theatre lies beside Herodes Atticus, and almost all the tragedies and comedies of Ancient Greece were written for this theatre.

The Kallimarmaro or Panathenaic Stadium of Athens, It is known as the Stadium, the Panathenaic Stadium or just Kallimarmaro (which means made of fine marble). We are referring to this incredible stadium that stands at the end of Herodes Atticus st, in a walking distance from the temple of Olympian Zeus, the Arch of Hadrian and the Acropolis. In the late 19th century (1986), it was renovated to host the first Modern Olympic Games that were held in Athens.

Syntagma square (Constitution square) is located at the centre of modern Athens. It faces the Greek Parliament, this impressive palace that used to be the residency of King Otto. In front of this aristocratic building are the soldiers, known as the Evzones who guard the Greek Parliament wearing the traditional Greek uniform. Today, Syntagma square houses the homonymous metro station and a couple of nice cafes. It is worth mentioning that it is one of the largest squares in Greece surrounded by beautiful luxurious hotels, a lot of travel agencies and many exchange booths.

My favorite neighborhood in Athens, in the shadow of the Acropolis, the Plaka is like a village within the city, an island for those who don't have the time to visit the Greek Islands.

Parks & Nature

The National Garden of Athens: Right in the heart of Athens, between Syntagma Square and the Kallimarmaro (Panathenaic) Stadium, stands the famous National Garden of Athens, a beautiful area to escape the noisy city centre and relax in a lush green environment. It is almost unbelievable that such an amazing garden is situated among the busiest avenues of the city and still it is so well-protected from noise. The National Garden covers a vast area of about 16 hectares and they have three entrances: from Amalias Avenue, Vassilissis Sofias Avenue and from the Zappeion Megaron. It is situated on the north of Syntagma square, right next to the Greek Parliament.
