There are only five ecosystems in the world where the concentration of these planktons is high enough to be considered bioluminescent bays, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them.

It didn't do so well, though, falling to the Earl of Cumberland in 1598 and the Dutch Commander Boudewyn Hendrick in 1625. In 1846, it was remodeled and converted for full-time use as the governor’s house. The building, which is also known as El Palacio de Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina Palace), has housed no less than 170 governors of Puerto Rico.

f you have a family with children, be aware that the waters are not the best for swimming due to strong currents. Nearby, you can enjoy Playita del Condado, a small beach with calmer water, better for swimming and doing a little snorkeling.
You can access Condado beach through Ventana al Mar Park on Ashford Avenue. There’s off-street parking, although limited. There is a convenient parking garage right across from Venta al Mar park for an affordable daily rate of $6 – $10.

You can access Condado beach through Ventana al Mar Park on Ashford Avenue. There’s off-street parking, although limited. There is a convenient parking garage right across from Venta al Mar park for an affordable daily rate of $6 – $10.
