If you've never had country-fried steak then you must try it here! The closest restaurant to our house and also one of my favorites. A perfect day would be having a hearty breakfast here and then heading out for a long hike. Also one of the best places to get a milkshake.

my favorite hikes in WNC

Hike a section of the famous Appalachian National Scenic Trail (or A.T.) on top of Max Patch Mountain near Hot Springs. This 4,600-ft. bald mountain was cleared and used as pasture in the 1800s. Today, it's a 350-acre tract of open land on a high knob with 360-degree views. It's one of the most spectacular settings you'll experience in the Blue Ridge.

Hemphill Bald is one of the finest viewpoints in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Situated on the park’s easternmost boundary along the formidable Cataloochee Divide, this grassy summit provides fantastic 270° views of surrounding ranges in North Carolina.

A fairly strenuous but rewarding hike at elevations ranging from 4,000 feet to above 5,000. Some really awesome views, not heavily trafficked and a great hike for spotting bears.

Sightseeing

One of our favorite places to hang out. I would recommend getting there via the scenic route. The route officially starts at Ferguson's Gas station and supply in Fines Creek NC -- HWY 209 Northbound. About 12 miles in, you hit a long straight away, here you will find a large rock building next to the fire Department. This is the Rattlers Den, the halfway point. The road then coils back up in the Pisgah Forrest as you make your way to the beautiful town of Hot Springs. If you map it on google maps from the cabin you will find it!

While the best times to view elk are usually early morning and late evening, elk may also be active on cloudy summer days and before or after storms.

You will pass Panthercreek Outfitters and the horses on your way to our cabin. I haven't done this yet but I love seeing the horses just below our cabin. I would highly recommend this to anyone that likes to ride horses or just wants to try something new. The views from the rides are amazing and some of the guides share local stories and history.
