Tacos

Because no trip to Mexico City would be complete without some
Probably our favorite taco joint in the neighborhood. Decor is non-existent, lighting is pretty awful, and there is nowhere to sit down so you’ll have to eat standing up (hence the name), but the tacos are awesome and they get better the later you go in the night. We recommend the Arrachera con Queso order, the regular Pastor tacos, or the Pastor de Arrachera con Queso, with a Chaparrita to wash them down.

This Monterrey classic recently opened its first Mexico City locale and it’s been packed since day one. Super tasty, and entirely unpretentious. We fell in love with costras de res and pastor and haven’t been able to order anything else, but everything from their short menu should be good. It ties up with el Califa and Tres Galeones for the closest taco place you can walk to from the apartment.

Ugly as sin but the Costilla con queso taco is to die for. Order two with a side of beans and some cebollitas preparadas on the side and you’re set for the night.

This legendary always-open taco stand from one of downtown’s busiest streets offers some of the best suadero tacos in the city. Meat slowly cooked in lard until it melts in your taco.

A little too expensive for tacos and certainly franchise-y, but full of flavor and definitely cleaner than most taco joints. Super close to the apartment as well. We love the Gaona con queso and the pastor tacos.

When Tres Galeones first opened I probably spent a couple of months eating there two or sometimes even three times a week. Quality went slightly down afterwards (or maybe I just overdid it), but it’s still a solid choice for getting fish and shrimp tacos if you don’t want want to venture far from the apartment. My favorites are the fish pastor taco, the Baja shrimp taco, the Carnitas de Pescado taco and the shrimp & marlin with cheese burrito.

This is one of my favorite fish taco joints. I particularly like the Campechano fish and shrimp taco and the shrimp quesadilla, but everything should be good. Just remember that half the flavor comes from generously building your tacos with the sauces and sides on the salad bar. Queues are long and they close at six pm sharp. They have several locales, but the one in Condesa beats the rest IMO.

A Mexico City classic, this taco place has several locales spread across the city, all of them good and featuring a sprawling menu. I love the Gringa (pastor meat over cheese), the costra de arrachera and the classic pastors with some tangerine juice to wash the whole thing down.

Family owned El Parnita has a wide, constantly changing menu, filled with only samplers and appetizers, most of them in the shape of very distinctive and unique tacos. Friday lunch El Parnita morphs into quite possibly the largest concentration of hipsters in the city, which makes it more of a social gathering than a restaurant, so consider going another day of you’d like to sit down at a table without a long wait. Highly recommended in any event. Beloved menu mainstays are the Carmelita Tacos, the Chile Meco Rellenos, and anything tuna based.

At night you can go upstairs from El Parnita to Páramo. Paramo is just as hipsterish and has some of the more unique tacos in CDMX: boar tacos, duck confit tacos, and our favorite, the costa azul tuna taco. The mezcal cocktails are also terrific.
