exceptional local pub
Traditional pub which is one of the premiere music venues in the West. Family-friendly, community orientated, regular community and festival events, tasty pizzas! Well-deserved 5-star rating from Tripadvisor, trad music every Wednesday night, blues/country miscellany on Thursdays. 15 minute drive.

Campbell's Tavern

Sightseeing
The gorgeous little village is beside Ashford Castle and the ruins of Cong Abbey. Made famous by the 1952 film The Quiet Man, Cong boasts lovely long woodland and lakeshore walks. Great for bike rides, picnics, horseriding. Good coffee shops and lunch venues...and pubs of course! 40 minutes scenic drive.

A hidden gem, the drive/cycle along the top of Lough Corrib is one of the most picturesque in the West. For walkers we recommend the Green Road (a little bit of local knowledge is required to find it...but then you have it to yourself (almost!).
Plenty of picnic spots along the shoreline, and, a few kilometers further on from the village of Cornamona, the most spectacular entrance to Connemara.

15th century Franciscan friary, on the banks of the Black River, 2km from Headford, Co. Galway. Very romantic, evocative destination, comprising the best surviving remains in the country. Great for hide-and-seek too!

The highest point in East Galway, Knockma is a favourite local walking trail with a panoramic vista over Lough Corrib, ranging from Croagh Patrick on the north horizon to the Burren in the south. The summit has two Neolithic mounds (ca. 3,000 BC) one of which is said to be the burial place of Finnbhearra, king of the faeries, the other the grave of Queen Maeve. one of them was re-modelled into a fort by one of the more flamboyant of the Kirwans of neaby Castlehacket House who wanted to commune with the Síd or mound people, reputedly the mythological Tuatha Dé Danann. At the start of the walk are the ruins of a 14th/15th century towerhouse.

Why not spend a while exploring tranquil Annaghdown, with its majestic monastic ruins dating back to the 7th century (associated with Brendan the Navigator who discovered America), great fishing (boats can be hired) and swimming from the pier, when the weather permits, against the backdrop of Annaghdown Castle (private) dating from the 15th century. The pier is a gentle 10 minute stroll from the accomodation.
