Neighborhoods

Venice is a very hippy, bohemian beach town with upscale commercial and residential pockets. The Venice Boardwalk is the site of funky shops, street performers and colorful murals. There’s also a skate park and Muscle Beach outdoor gym. Abbot Kinney Boulevard features foodie hot spots, stylish boutiques and coffee bars. If it's your first time in Los Angeles this is a great neighborhood to visit while also visiting Santa Monica which is right next to Venice.

Santa Monica is a great place to visit while visiting Venice Beach. There are a lot of people walking around outside and some great restaurants and art galleries as well. If it's your first time in LA I recommend stopping by the Santa Monica Pier which is a large double-jointed pier at the foot of Colorado Avenue. It contains a small amusement park which is free to enter, concession stands, and areas for views. The rides and attractions at the small park are priced individually and range in price from $5-10 ish.

Malibu is a city west of LA that you could drive to in about 1 hr. It's a beautiful ride up the PCH and if you want to visit Malibu during the day and end your day stopping in Santa Monica and Venice on the way back it will be a great coastal day. Malibu has a lot of celebrity homes and the beaches are much less busy than they are in LA proper. Zuma Beach is a local favorite. To the east is Malibu Lagoon State Beach, known as Surfrider Beach for its waves. Nearby is the Spanish Revival–style Adamson House, with local history displays in its Malibu Lagoon Museum. There are many cute lunch spots in Malibu for people with all diets.

I know a lot of people who do a day trip to Santa Barbara. It's located on the central California coast, with the Santa Ynez Mountains as backdrop. You'll see Mediterranean-style white stucco buildings with red-tile roofs downtown which reflect the city’s Spanish colonial heritage. State Street has a lot of upscale boutiques and restaurants offering great food and local wines. On a nearby hill, Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786, houses Franciscan friars and a museum.

Relax

A really lovely place to have a picnic, read a book or walk your dog. There are Pedal Boats [fun for a couple] Picnic Tables and Walking Paths around the lake. Very local spot in the "hip" neighborhood of Echo Park.

Food scene

A really lovely, "hip" restaurant owned by the musician Moby. Features Mediterranean, plant-based cuisine & woodsy-chic design. I would recommend a reservation. It's a very cozy, intimate atmosphere so it's perfect for both date night and friends meet ups. The food is excellent. Some of my favorites on the menu - The Flat Bread Pizza, The Arancini, Brussels Sprouts and Gnocchi.

Mohawk Bend is located in a retrofitted 100-year-old silent movie theater and is one of my favorite places to eat and hang out with friends or just go by myself and have a pizza during Happy Hour. They have a ton of California craft beers & a delicious locally sourced American menu with options for all diets. They have a great Happy Hour during ~ Mon – Fri: 3 PM – 7 PM ~ Fri – Sat: 11 PM – Close ~ Sun – Thurs: 10 PM – Close. There is usually a wait during peak hours so I would recommend making a reservation unless you're visiting during HH.

Sightseeing

Definitely check this place out if you would like to do a very local hike. Once you get to the top you have a beautiful 360 degree view of LA. There are stairs you can climb up or just a trail you can walk up. It seems intimidating at first but it's not bad at all and the view is worth it. I would go earlier in the morning before it gets too hot out.

If you're looking to have a very local, chill night seeing some stand up comedy I HIGHLY recommend going to the Virgil on a Monday night for Hot-Tub hosted by Kurt Braunohler & Kristen Schaal. It's only $5 if you buy your ticket online and $8 at the door. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8. It always attracts a good crowd so if you want to get a good seat I would get there around 6:30 to get in line because we always get a seat when we do that.
