Built by the first Portuguese Viceroy in India, Don Francesco de Almeida (1505), St. Angelo’s Fort is among the most historic sites in Kannur. This massive triangular laterite structure is flanked by gigantic bastions that make for an imposing sight. It changed hands between the Dutch and eventually the British, who would remodel and reequip it into their primary military stronghold in Malabar.

Located north to Payyannur, Kavvayi is the largest backwater stretch in North Kerala. It stretches from Kavvayi near Payyannur in Kannur district to Neeleshwar in Kasargod district. There are several small and large islands in the backwater adding to its enchanting beauty. The backwaters is fed by four rivers.

From October to March, the whole of north malabar witnesses theyyam. Theyyam is an art form which is performed in temples and family shrines all around north kerala. Depending on when you are in Kannur, you will be able to witness at least one of the many theyyams.

Local travel and eating out

Cheapest way to travel is by the local buses. People are friendly and will be able to guide you in English. There are lots of cheap options to have local food. During evenings you can see lots of roadside stalls serving local delicacies. But do make sure to check which items are spicy and if they can make it less spicy for you.

Kerala has a tropical climate and has consistent temperature through out the year - Max between 29 33 and min between 23 and 25 (all in Celsius). Winter - November to February Summer - February to June Monsoon - June to September, October and November Kannur has many beaches and you can pack accordingly when you travel.
