Sightseeing

Get those demon carbs out of your body and run up all 75 of the super-steep infamous Exorcist steps at the corner of 36th and Prospect streets. The steps had their moment of fame as the spot where Father Karras tumbled to his demise in the in the cult horror classic The Exorcist. Locals flock to the steps to get their sweat on, so you’ll be in good company. From Wikipedia: The Exorcist steps are a set of stone steps in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. famous for being featured in the 1973 film The Exorcist. The steps are located at the corner of Prospect St and 36th St NW, leading down to M Street NW, and were built in 1895 during construction of the adjacent Car Barn. For The Exorcist, the steps were padded with half-inch-thick rubber to film the death of the character Father Damien Karras. Because the house from which Karras falls was set back slightly from the steps, the film crew constructed an extension with a false front to the house in order to film the scene. The stuntman tumbled down the stairs twice. Georgetown University students charged people around $5 each to watch the stunt from the rooftops. In a ceremony Halloween weekend 2015 that featured the film's director William Friedkin and screenwriter William Peter Blatty (who also wrote the book on which the film is based), the Exorcist steps were recognized as a D.C. landmark and official tourist attraction by Mayor of the District of Columbia Muriel Bowser, with a plaque unveiled at the base of the steps recognizing its importance to D.C. and film history.

The Old Stone House is the oldest unchanged building in Washington, D.C., United States. The house is also Washington's last Pre-Revolutionary colonial building on its original foundation. Built in 1765, Old Stone House is located at 3051 M Street, Northwest in the Georgetown neighborhood. Sentimental local folklore preserved the Old Stone House from being demolished, unlike many colonial homes in the area that were replaced by redevelopment. The Old Stone House was constructed in three phases during the 18th century and is an example of vernacular architecture. The house was built as a one-story structure. Additions were later made, and it was used both as a residence and for business. In the mid-20th century, at one time it was the site of a used-car dealership. After acquisition and renovation by the National Park Service (NPS) in the 1950s, the Old Stone House was adapted as a house museum. The Old Stone House stands among the neighborhood's stores and restaurants as an example of local history for tourists, shoppers, and students. The building is considered part of the Rock Creek Parkway urban natural area and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Old Stone House is also a contributing property to the Georgetown Historic District, a National Historic Landmark. Today, the home is 85% original to its 18th-century construction.

Kafe Leopold (+ Konditorei) is the exact antidote to those too-cute-for-words pastry shops. Sure, there may be 26 different desserts to tempt your sweet tooth here, but there’s nothing twee about this sleek space tucked in an alley behind posh M Street. Descend the stairs and discover a lovely courtyard garden—complete with a trickling fountain—before stepping into a relaxed arena with eye-catching photos and a decidedly modern ambience. Savory choices include rostbraten vom Angusrind and bratwurst, but even with their delicious homemade taste, it's the final course that is first priority. Peruse the long list of Kaffeespezialitäten, and then nibble on a slice of esterhazy (five-layer hazelnut cake), a delicious éclair or any other can't-go-wrong treat. This hidden away restaurant serves European-style salads, savory tarts, and entrees like schnitzel and grilled salmon. The patio just off M Street is also a draw during nice weather. Every town, no matter its size, has a bar or restaurant where the powerful gather to hold court. Washington has Cafe Milano. It has been a destination for high-ranking members of media and of governments around the world since it opened in November 1992, on the same day Bill Clinton, now a Cafe Milano regular, was first elected president. It is a place where diners can enjoy relative privacy as they dine on grilled calamari and velvety burrata. Chef Spike Mendelsohn and his family officially open the third location of Good Stuff Eatery in Georgetown. In addition to "farmhouse" burgers and fries, the new outpost has a "creamery" on the second floor churching homemade custard for milkshakes in view of customers. Also new: The Georgetown location is making its red velvet shake, a special, part of the permanent menu. (The famous toasted marshmallow shake will be available too.) Completing the farmhouse look is a wall made of reclaimed barn wood from Maryland. Good Stuff already has locations in Capitol Hill and Crystal City.

Bustling brasserie serves classic French fare & drinks amid a zinc bar, tile floors & sidewalk cafe. Washington Post Review by Tom Sietsema Here’s why it’s so hard to book a table at a decent hour at the city’s most popular French restaurant: the bread basket, generously filled with three flavors, including country wheat; the waiters in their long white aprons, there when you need them and quick to describe any dish to your satisfaction; a setting of pressed-tin ceilings, blood-red banquettes and honeyed lighting that could pass for a brasserie in the country of inspiration. Then there’s the food, textbook versions of onion soup, steak frites and apple tarte Tatin, plus daily specials that will make you glad to be there on, say, Friday for spot-on bouillabaisse. Who in town makes a lighter foie gras mousse, or a finer duck a l’orange, the skin of the leg fried so that it shatters under your teeth? Noise is the cochon at the party. Otherwise, I recognize the attraction of fans including Gérard Araud. If it’s good enough for the discerning French ambassador, it’s good enough for moi.

Last summer, chef Adam Howard left his perch at Mike Isabella Concepts and landed at this Shaker-chic dining room at the Park Hyatt. Consider the kitchen—which at our previous check-in felt tired—reinvigorated. At lunch, Howard slings lobster rolls and the city’s best Reuben. Later on, look for smart riffs on Southern classics. Braised greens go unexpectedly well with white soy, while a sorghum-brined pork chop is as tender as you’d hope for. On the seafood front, we haven’t found sweeter scallops this year than the ones Howard herb-roasts and serves with burnt-eggplant purée. Very expensive. We like it for breakfast!

From ZAGAT: These “phenomenal” Indian destinations take a centuries-old cuisine to a “whole new level” with “innovative” interpretations like crispy spinach “unlike anything you’ve ever had” served in “beautiful”, “modern” settings that rank among DC’s “swankiest”; “friendly, unobtrusive” servers put novices at ease, while an “accessible” price point (for high-end dining) means one must “plan ahead” for prime-time reservations. Our favorite "must have" dish is the Palak Chaat.

Hair and Nail Salon

This small nail salon is near the Safeway store. They take walk-ins as well as appointments. The salon is on the second floor of a shoe store. It's a favorite of Georgetown residents and GU students. I once sat next to a former Vice President's wife. I think the going rate for a manicure is $19 and a pedicure is $36. Georgetown Nails is a 15–minute walk from the house.

Winner of the Best Capital Baguette contest audience prize, the name pretty much says it all. Fresh Baguette’s bread is made in the old-world style and baked throughout the day in an oven imported from France. Crusty and chewy, walking home with one of these tucked beneath your arm will bring you one step closer to Paris. Additional locations are in Georgetown and Rockville.
