SkyBar (18 Battery Park Avenue) is a unique venue situated on multiple fire escape terraces atop the historic Flat Iron Building. Ride the original elevator to the top for panoramic sunset views of the distant mountains. Their menu includes cocktails, beer, wine and appetizers. Be sure to get your picture made under their sign, complete with the year. They open at 4 PM Monday-Friday and 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday during the warmer months (no indoor space). You will take the ride up to the SkyBar on an old elevator with an attendant. Very cool! NOTE: They have a very strict age 21+ policy.

Pillar (309 College Street) is atop the Hilton Garden Inn at the corner of Charlotte and College. This "garden-to-glass" bar has a fresh list of signature craft cocktails, regional beers and sustainable wines. Enjoy your drink with some small plates of southern fusion fare. The outdoor terrace is perched on the sixth floor and boasts sunset views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They also have a large indoor lounge with large windows to enjoy views year-round. It's an easy walk from Pack Square Park. They open every day at 4 PM, closing at midnight on Sunday-Thursday and 2 AM on Friday and Saturday.

Food Scene

If you are a foodie, then Asheville is your game, my friend! Oh my gosh, you will be in food heaven here. Asheville boasts the highest number of James Beard chef nominees and award winners per capita in the U.S. So if you love excellent food that is prepared by the best. You can also find awesome food trucks, small cafes and bistros, and just about any kind of food at different price points all over the city. Many restaurants in the area have vegan and gluten-free options, and the farm-to-table and organic food movement is very strong here. Fresh produce and locally-sourced foods are a common find and are usually noted on the menus.
Best breakfast and brunch in town in West Asheville. Awesome menu and outdoor patio seating that is dog friendly. Reservations are a must, particularly on the weekends, or go really early to beat the crowds. My personal fave is their Avocado Toast!

Biscuit Head may be one of my fave casual places for breakfast that is quick, fun, and classic Asheville! Definitely order biscuits so you can go to the "biscuit bar" and try a selection of hand-mixed flavored butters and jams. Your taste buds will thank you! Their mimosas are delish, too! There are multiple locations across Asheville, but the one on Hendersonville Road is only 15 minutes from our place. It is a newer, larger location with covered outdoor seating. Dogs are welcome on the patio!

If you are looking for a nice dinner out with artfully prepared dishes sourced from local Farm to Table growers, this is a wonderful place for a "dining experience". Reservations recommended.

Gan Shan West focuses on a diverse array of noodle dishes in a relaxed neighborhood environment. Dine in, eat at our outdoor courtyard, or take your food to go. Their menu changes seasonally (or sometimes simply inspirationally) while the Gan Shan commitment to a delicious, nourishing, and restorative food experience remains unwavering. Here's a Gluten-free and Vegan entree we recommend: GSW RICE BOWL sweet soy, mayo, chili oil, roasted eggplant, pickles, peanut, choice of protein at additional charge $9 (we like it with crispy tofu) Outdoor seating under the trees (probably dog-friendly)

The veggie sampler plate is awesome if you are a veg-head! Seating on cushions in the back room, and sometimes there's a belly dancer. Awesome food and a great experience!

Shopping

Need hiking or outdoor gear? Love brands like Columbia, Kühl, and Patagonia? This place has it all. There are two locations--one in Asheville and one in Hendersonville--but the Asheville store has way more to offer and is a much larger space. Be sure to check out both levels so you don't miss anything. There is also a wonderful selection of travel gifts and souvenirs in the back of the store on the main level in Asheville if you need to pick up a little something something for that friend or relative at home. The service here is excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable about their products. An added interest is the building where Mast is located in downtown Asheville. Old wood floors in a vintage building make shopping here feel like you are stepping back in time.

This is the largest private residence in the United States still to this day, even though it was constructed in 1895. Biltmore House was a collaborative effort between George Vanderbilt, architect Richard Morris Hunt, and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Completed in 1895, the home contains over four acres of floor space, including 35 bedrooms, 45 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. It is a marvel of residential architecture with 250 rooms and is an example of French Renaissance architecture.

One of those places that stand apart from the ordinary, Mount Mitchell’s dramatic summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet and was inspiration for one of the nation’s first state parks. From its easily accessible observation deck, the spruce-fir forest of Mount Mitchell State Park leads the eye to unmatched views. A museum explains the mountain’s cultural and natural history, and its trail network allows visitors to explore up close, offering short hikes near the summit and challenging treks leading to adjacent wilderness areas. A nine-site tent campground is open in warm-weather months, and backpacking opportunities abound, including entry onto the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. A concession area and a full-service restaurant serve visitors from May to October. Campers and hikers, please read the Bear Advisory.
