This isn't really a restaurant, but it has delicious fresh pizza (pick up only, though you can order ahead) and a wonderful selection of fresh and frozen Italian food. Picking up the pizza is a two person affair - one to go in and pick up the pizza, and the other to drive around the block.

We were regulars at their U Street location when we lived near there. We haven't tried the uptown restaurant yet but can recommend their great pizzas, salad and selection of beer.

Grocery Shopping
Besides the Whole Foods Market in Tenleytown, and the huge 24 hour Giant on Wisconsin and Macomb, these stores are within walking distance.
The closest grocery store is Giant Food at Van Ness, just by the Van Ness subway station. It's a short walk, especially if you cut through the alleys.

Getting Around
The Van Ness metro Red Line station is just 8 minutes away, a little shorter if you cut through the alleys. The L2 bus stopping at Tilden and Connecticut goes to Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle(ish) and close to the White House. The and H4 crosstown buses also stop here. Also at Connecticut and Tilden is a Capital Bikeshare stand.
You can save a minute or two cutting through the alleys - go toward Upton Street and under the Edmund Burke School bridgeway and continue on the Veazey Street.

Walking and Bicycle Trails
Rock Creek Park has numerous trails perfect for biking, jogging, or dog walking. Just walk down the hill past the old spring house to connect to the bike trail at Peirce Mill, and the side trail to Melvin Hazen Park which will return you to Connecticut Avenue. Save some energy if you plan to come back up the hill - it is long and steep!
Just down the hill is Peirce Mill and Rock Creek Park, site of an extensive network of bicycle and hiking trails maintained by the National Park Service. They provide an interactive map here:

The rear entrance opens into Rock Creek Park, so it is possible to make a loop and return along the Rock Creek trail.
