Atmospheric and historic castle. Easily spend an afternoon here and walking along the river, or into town for some food and a look at the shops.

This is not local to the cottage, but if you are coming from or back to Aberdeen it is well worth planning a visit here. Stunning castle in dramatic scenic position. Nice clifftop walks too.

Absolutely amazing fort with museum and cafe. Huge and unexpected to find in this little corner of Scotland. Its history isn't a pleasant story for the Scots, but it is very well worth the trip to see it. Combine it will a trip to the Moray Firth coast to see the Dolphins.

Lovely walk or cycle around the Loch. Look for the little castle on the island in the middle. You need to pay for the car park but it is very well worth it. Nice in all seasons.

It is free and completely awesome. They do ask for donations though. Big area and all outside. Good shop and cafe too. Highlight was the 17th century village

Middle Saturday in July - Tomintoul Highland Games in the village. Tug of War, highland dance, piping, stalls, races, caber tossing, hammer throwing.

Post office and grocery shop (keep slightly different hours). Great for bits and pieces - milk, bread, cupboard basics. Some fresh goods too. Good for the bits you have run out of or forgot in the supermarket in Grantown or Ballater
