Welcome to Historical Milton! Located at the Head of the Broadkill. Settled in 1672, Milton is known as the "Head of the Broadkill" for it's geographical location at the head of the Broadkill River. This location, just a few miles from the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, made our quaint Victorian Village an ideal location for shipbuilding in the days of old. For the history buff, Milton provides an abundance of local and natural history. Divided in allegiance during the Civil War, the town is the birthplace of 5 governors and home to many officers who participated in the famous War of 1812. Our historic district boasts nearly 200 houses on the National Register of Historic Places. While visiting Milton, stop by the Lydia B. Canon Museum to learn more about Milton's historic past or catch a production at the Historic Milton Theater. You can browse the antique stores, visit cafes and, the Milton Library is one of the largest library facilities in Sussex County. Be sure to tour the country's fastest growing micro brewery, Milton's own Dogfish Head Brewery, offering daily tours. The Broadkill River offers a variety of outdoor activities. Fishing, boating, canoeing, and kayaking are popular sports , while Memorial Park provides family fun with playground and picnicking facilities. For the golf enthusiasts, we have an 18 hole championship course and par-3 course just minutes from town. Nature lovers can visit Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and the McCabe Preserve, both just a few miles from Milton for bird watching, hiking, boating and fishing. With Delaware beaches a few miles away, Milton has much to offer.
