The NEW Zoo is closer than the DeYoung Zoo, and also offers an adventure park for your older children. The zoo is good in that you can complete it in an afternoon, or you can spend a day if you add the park.

Gibson Island (really a peninsula) is a 26-acre stretch of land owned by the Cloverleaf Lakes association. It is great for some light hiking during the day (no motorized vehicles, fires, camping allowed). You can get there using the canoe/kayak/paddle boat, or there is a dock for the deck boat.
