Qué harás

We begin with a brief conversation about woven cloth, the history of weaving and the development of looms.
I will demonstrate good technique for weaving with wool and introduce more tips as you weave on a vintage 4 shaft table loom set up with a wool warp designed to give you the opportunity to play with both colour and some weave structures. The warp is named Outlook, referencing Wellington's infamous southerly weather systems and the promise of spring. All yarns are provided however you are welcome to bring your favourite wool yarns and we can see if they can be incorporated into your work.
Depending on your skill level and the motifs you chose to weave, you will take home your own piece of fabric that is suitable for you to construct into a cushion cover, a table runner, a diary cover or a purse.
You can be new to weaving, or already have some experience and wish to learn more about weaving with New Zealand wool and about sustainable design.
We will take a break for refreshments, which are provided.

I am excited to offer you the experience of building your own cloth, and having studio buddies for a little part of my week.
After graduating with BDes Hons (Textile Design) from Massey University's College of Creative Arts, I established Niche Textile Studio to continue to explore the potential of woven wool cloth in contemporary, sustainable design.
I weave almost exclusively with naturally coloured wool, grown and processed in New Zealand. The warm hues sit beautifully alongside contemporary interior materials including timbers, ceramics and metals.
In 2018 NZ's Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet commissioned me to design and weave a blanket for the 3rd child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Donde estarás

My studio looks out across Lyall Bay, a well known surf and dog walking beach.
Lyall Bay has lots of lovely cafes within a 10 minute walk including Maranui Cafe and her little sister Queen Sally's Diamond Deli . You may like to visit them for breakfast or lunch before or after your time weaving.

I was really looking forward to learning to weave and Christine is. great teacher and a lovely person, with a passion for her craft and a natural empathy which helped us to choose the materials, colours and weave so that I managed to produce a piece of work in just one day that I’m delighted with. Beautiful wool, gorgeous colours and a careful, step-by-step learning process that kept the whole experience positive and hugely enjoyable.

I highly recommend this weaving experience with Christine. She is a warm and welcoming teacher and has many stories to tell of her design studies and her work with weaving. Her creative space is in a beautiful and inspiring setting and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and working on her loom. This was a fabulous way to spend an afternoon, and I would love to do it again.

Christine’s weaving experience gets our highest marks for her superb hospitality, communication, teaching style, and shared expertise. She is a gifted and authentic artist that left us with invaluable insights into design, the culture of New Zealand, and the craft of weaving. My daughter and I are grateful for the time we spent with Christine and we will treasure our experience each time we look upon the work we made with her. Please add this to your “must do” list while in Wellington.

I had a lovely, lovely time with Christine. She gave a clear introduction to weaving, showing samples of different things I could try. She gave suggestions about what would be useful for me to try given the type of loom I have. She then gave me a chance to think about what I wanted to make, and I completed a cushion front by the end of the workshop. Plus she provided lovely food!
